Tropical Storm Barry Forecast Verification
Written by Derek Ortt on November 30, 2007
While Tropical Storm Barry made landfall made landfall on the west coast of Florida, there were no verifiable forecasts issued on the storm. This was due to a severe illness that I experienced at that time. Coverage of Barry was restricted to storm updates.
The storm updates did not capture the weakening to a tropical depression prior to landfall. The effects of the vertical shear were not anticipated. However, updates did accurately convey the threat of heavy rainfall.
A Tropical Storm Warning was recommended about 12 hours prior to landfall. While Barry made landfall as a depression, it did bring tropical storm force wind gusts to Florida; therefore, the recommended warning was justified. This warning was dropped shortly after landfall.
