Subtropical Storm Nicole Forecast Verification
Written by Derek Ortt on June 2, 2005

There was only 1 forecast issued on Subtropical Storm Nicole. Nicole was only a subtropical cyclone for about 36 hours. The reason that only one forecast was issued was not only due to the short duration of the cyclone, but also because it was obvious that extra-tropical transition was about to occur at the time of the next forecast, making the forecast not very meaningful as only a 12-hour forecast could have been verified.

NWHHC did recommend a Gale Warning once the system became a subtropical cyclone. The lead time was late; however, NWHHC typically does not recommend even a Gale Warning before a system is classified; unless classification is a near certainty. Due to the extra-tropical characteristics exhibited by the storm, classification was not a certainty; thus, the late lead time.
