Rare December cyclone forms in the Caribbean. Expected to intensify into a tropical storm. Residents of the central and eastern Caribbean should closely monitor the progress of this system.
Currently, the center of Tropical Depression 20 is located near 13.6N and 76.0W. This places the center about 400 miles south of Jamaica. The motion is to the NE near 7 m.p.h. This general track is expected during the next few days.
Maximum winds are near 35 m.p.h. The pressure is estimated to be 1006mb. Further intensification is expected and this depression should become a tropical storm later today.

Odette is becoming much better organized in the Caribbean. residents of the Caribbean, mainly Hispaniola should closely monitor the progress of this system. Already, rainfall from the system is affecting Hispaniola. Severe flooding and mudslides are likely.
NWHHC will likely recommend watches or warnings as early as 7 p.m. this evening. Please consult with local emergency management officials for the official watches and warnings.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 14.0N and 75.6W. This places the storm about 300 miles SSE of Jamaica. The motion is to the NE near 10 m.p.h. This track should continue, bringing the storm near Hispaniola sometime late tomorrow or early Saturday.
Maximum winds are near 45 m.p.h. The pressure is estimated to be 1000mb. Continued intensification is likely from this system, and Odette could become a hurricane before making landfall.

Tropical Storm Odette continues to the northeast, toward Hispaniola. Already, heavy rainfall is occurring over the island. Up to 15 inches of rain is possible, which will likely result in life threatening flash flooding and mudslides.
NWHHC is not currently recommending any watches or warnings, though may do so tomorrow. There are numerous watches and warnings that various weather services of the Caribbean have issued. Please refer to local emergency management officials for the official watches and warnings.

Tropical Storm Odette continues toward Hispaniola. Already, heavy rainfall is occurring over the island. Up to 15 inches of rain is possible, which will likely result in life threatening flash flooding and mudslides. In addition, some rainfall is likely in Puerto Rico from this system.
NWHHC is not currently recommending any watches or warnings, though will likely do so today. There are numerous watches and warnings that various weather services of the Caribbean have issued. Please refer to local emergency management officials for the official watches and warnings.

The motion is to the NE near 6 m.p.h. and this general track is expected to continue, bringing the storm near Hipaniola sometime tomorrow, though landfall will be delayed if this track is farther east.
Maximum winds are between 45 and 50 m.p.h. The pressure is estimated to be 1000mb. Recon will soon be in the storm to determine whether or not the system is stronger than indicated here. In any event, further intensification is expected and Odette could near hurricane intensity.

Tropical Storm Odette is moving slowly in the Caribbean and is slightly stronger. However, it is not expected to become a hurricane. That being said, heavy rainfall is likely over Hispaniola and Puerto Rico during the next couple fo days. Flash
flooding and mudslides are likely.

Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 14.3N and 74.0W. This places the center about 310 miles SSW of Port Au Prince, Haiti. The motion is to the NNE near 6 m.p.h. and this general track is expected to continue, prehaps to
the NE, bringing the storm near Hipaniola sometime tomorrow, though landfall will be delayed if this track is farther east. If the ENE track continues, landfall would be delayed for several days and would be much farther east, toward the Lesser
Antilles.
Maximum winds are 50 m.p.h. The pressure is 997mb. Some further increase is possible, though atmospheric conditions are becoming too hostile for this to reach hurricane intensity.

4 P.M. EST 12/5/2003 TROPICAL STORM ODETTE UPDATE #5

Odette continues to move to the east. The threat to Puerto Rico is increasing. The greatest threat is heavy rainfall and the associated flash flooding and mudslides as up to 15 inches of rain can be expected in the high mountains of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Rain is already occurring over Hispaniola.
NWHHC is holding off on recommending any watches or warnings at this time as Odette is moving slowly and not toward land immediately. However, the respective weather services of the Caribbean have issued numerous Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings. Please refer to local emergency management officials for these watches and warnings.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 14.5N and 73.3W. This places the center about 260 miles south of Port Au Prince Haiti. The motion is to the east near 6 m.p.h. An ENE track is expected for about 12 to 24 hours, followed by more of a turn to the NE, bringing the center near the eastern portions of the Dominican Republic or western Puerto Rico late tomorrow or early Sunday.
Maximum winds are estimated to be between 55 and 60 m.p.h. The pressure is 995mb. Some further slight increase is possible during the next 24 hours; however, Odette is not expected to become a hurricane.

10 P.M. EST 12/6/2003 TROPICAL STORM ODETTE UPDATE #6

Odette continues to move to the ENE toward eastern Hispaniola. The worst of the weather is expected to be in the eastern portions of the Dominican Republic and the western parts of Puerto Rico. Heavy rainfall and associated flooding and mudslides are the greatest threat as up to 15 inches of rain can be expected. Rainfall has been occurring over Hispaniola for the past 24 hours.
NWHHC will likely recommend a Tropical Storm Warning sometime tomorrow morning. Please refer to local emergency management officials for all of the official watches and warnings, which there are numerous in effect already.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 15.3N and 72.6W. This places the center about 250 miles south of Port Au Prince, Haiti. The motion is to the ENE near 10 m.p.h. A gradual turn to the NE is expected, bringing the center across the eastern Parts of the Dominican Republic either late tomorrow or early on Sunday.
Maximum winds have been re-adjusted to 50 m.p.h. The pressure is 996mb. Little change in intensity is expected before landfall as conditions are only marginal further development.

Odette is moving more to the NE, closer to Hispaniola. Heavy rainfall is already occurring on the island. Up to 15 inches of rainfall remains possible, which is capable of producing flash flooding and mudslides in the mountains. This weather is expected to extend into Puerto Rico as well.
NWHHC now recommends a Tropical Storm Warning for the south coast of the Dominican Republic. Please refer to local emergency management officials for the official watches and warnings, which there are many of.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 15.7N and 72.4W. This places the center about 140 miles south of Isla Beata, Dominican Republic. The motion is to the NE near 10 m.p.h. This general track is expected to continue, bringing the storm inland later today.
Maximum winds are between 50 and 55 m.p.h. The pressure is 995mb. Minor fluctuations in intensity are possible before the storm makes landfall, after which time, weakening will begin.

Odette is NNE faster than expected. Landfall is now likely early this afternoon or late this morning in the western part of the Dominican Republic. IN addition, Odette appears to be nearing hurricane intensity. Greatets threats remain heavy rainfall as uo to 10 inches of additional rain is expected, which will likely result in life threatening flash floods and mudslides.
NWHHC now recommends a Hurricane WARNING from the Dominican Republic/Haiti border to 70W for the south coast. NWHHC now recommends a Tropical Storm Warning for the remainder of the Dominican Republic, and for the south coast of Haiti east of 71W. Please refer to local emergency management officials for the official watches and warnings, which there are many of.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 17.0N and 72.0W. This places the center about 60 miles south of Isla Beata, Dominican Republic. The motion is to the NE near 15 m.p.h. This general track is expected to continue, bringing the storm inland later today around noon, maybe slightly earler.
Maximum winds are estimated to have increased to about 65 m.p.h. The pressure is estimated ot be 993mb. Any additional increase in the winds could bring Odette to hurricane intensity.

Recon finds that Odette has not intensified as it nears Hispaniola. However, the heavy rainfall is already pounding the area and 10 inches of additional rain can be expected. The greatest threat is the associated flash flooding and mudslides that ma results form this storm.
NWHHC no longer recommends any hurricane warnings, but does recommend a Tropical Storm Warning for all of the Dominican Republic, and the south coast of Haiti east of 73W. Please refer to local emergency management officials for any official watches and warnings.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 16.9N and 72.1W. This places the center about 60 miles south of Isla Beata, Dominican Republic. The motion is to the NE near 10 m.p.h. and this track is expected to continue, bringing the storm inland this afternoon in the western parts of the Dominican Republic. However, the rainfall is going to cover the entire area.
Maximum winds have again been re-adjusted, this time back to 50 m.p.h. The pressure is 995mb. The winds were increased overnight based upon satellite data as recon was unable to finish its mission. Little change in intensity is expected until landfall. After landfall, rapid dissipation is expected.

Tropical Storm Odette is making landfall near Isla Beata, on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic and is bringing very heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the area. Up to 5 inches of additional rainfall can be expected, which will likely bring flash flooding and mudslides. Some of these may be life threatening. Therefore, it is imperative that one listens to all advice given by local emergency management officials.
NWHHC no longer recommends a Tropical Storm Warning for Haiti, though continues to for all of the Dominican Republic. Please refer to local emergency management officials for any official watches and warnings.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 17.7N and 71.8W. This places the center near Isla Beata. The motion is to the NE near 13 m.p.h. This track is expected to continue, taking the storm across the mountains of Hispaniola and into the Atlantic tomorrow morning.
Maximum winds remain near 50 m.p.h. The pressure is 994mb. Rapid dissipation is now expected as the storm is over the high mountains. However, the rainfall will be slower to diminish.

Odette is moving into the interior of the Dominican Republic bringing very heavy rainfall in the process. Unconfirmed reports suggest that over 5 inches of rain has already fallen and up to 5 inches of additional rainfall can be expected. This will bring about more flash flooding and mudslides. Conditions have already started to improve for Haiti and will begin to improve for the southern Dominican Republic this evening and for the remainder of the nation overnight as Odette moves to the NE.
NWHHC continues to recommend a Tropical Storm Warning for all of the Dominican Republic. Please refer to local emergency management officials for the official watches and warnings.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 18.0N and 71.7W. This places the center inland, to the north of Isla Beata. The motion is to the NNE near 8 m.p.h. and this track should continue during the next few hours, taking the system across the very high mountains of central Dominican Republic.
Maximum winds have decreased to near 45 m.p.h. The pressure is estimated to be 997mb. Weakening should begin at a very rapid rate now that the center has moved into the very high mountains. Dissipation is expected before the storm moves into the Atlantic.

Tropical Storm Odette continues to move across the high mountains of Hispaniola, bringing torrential rainfall in the process. Satellite imagery indicates that the rainfall rate may be increasing, which may allow for local accumulations in excess of 5 inches in the next few hours. The heavy rainfall is expected to produce significant flash flooding and mudslides, which may be life threatening. Conditions are already improving in Haiti, and will begin to improve over the southern coast of the Dominican Republic overnight, as Odette moves farther to the NE.
NWHHC continues to recommend a Tropical Storm Warning for the Dominican Republic. Please refer to local emergency management officials for the official watches and warnings.
Currently, the center of Tropical Storm Odette is located near 18.2N and 71.3W. This places the center about 30 miles inland, over the southern Dominican Republic. The motion is to the NNE near 8 m.p.h. This track is expected to continue, keeping the storm over Hispaniola for the next 12-18 hours. Conditions are worst ahead of the center; therefore, once the center passes, conditions will rapidly improve.
Maximum winds are estimated to be near 40 m.p.h. The pressure is estimated to be 995mb. Rapid weakening is expected overnight as the center is over very high mountains and dissipation is expected within the next 12 hours.
